The Show
The Journey is presented as a single, uninterrupted choreography with a runtime of approximately 85 minutes. Learn about the themes, the story, and the soundtrack below.
Tonight’s event, graciously hosted by Transformer Table, is situated in Tiohtiá:ke on the traditional territory of the Kanien’kehà:ka (Mohawk). This land has long been a place where commercial and social exchanges have occurred between the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Huron/Wendat, Abenaki, and Anishinaabeg.

SBDC understands that we must continue to educate ourselves and others on how to end our colonial relationship with indigenous peoples while findings ways to redefine what life can be afterwards.
The Path

Feist - Caught a Long Wind
Choreography lead by Sonia Balazovjech
The COVID pandemic magnified awareness of the human condition. The resulting isolation forced us to confront our identity, our values and emotions. Much like the story of SBDC as a singular company, those who form the collective have charted their own courses, with our paths diverging, intersecting, and amplifying one another through our individual journeys.
Obstacles

Stromae - Défiler
Choreography lead by Samantha Savard, Alyssa-Marie Crawford
Randomness is the lack of apparent predictability in events. As a species we seek patterns, control, and routine - but our most animalistic tendencies are triggered by the unexpected. Unhealthy relationships, financial disparity, and failing health are among the events that manifest fear, anxiety and anger. Our inability to control the randomness of our existence is mocked by the obstacles that we encounter.

Vulnerability

Adele - My Little Love
Choreography lead by Tiffany Leclair, Kim McBain, Nicole Legault
Vulnerability is at the very core of the human experience. It is an unparalleled strength that exists only in the presence of weakness - an unshaded window into the most jeopardized parts of ourselves.
Toxicity

Choreography lead by Dawn Patulli
Continuously building walls to defend our vulnerability can ignite a fuse that burns noxiously. Clouding our judgment is a resulting toxicity that poisons the best of ourselves and hurts others - oftentimes the ones we love most.
Avoidance

Champion - Dat Train
with additional found audio recordings
Choreography lead by Sonia Balazovjech
Approaching the limit of our capacity to cope, we begin to lose ourselves. The sincerity and intention of our support systems are dulled, muted. We disassociate. We disappear. We ghost. Pushed to the edge, our identities are held hostage by suffocating anxiety, silencing calls for help behind a stone-faced mask.
Resistance

Delirium - Let Me Fall
Choreography lead by Alyssa-Marie Crawford
Consumed by our internal monologue we develop behavioural patterns - cataracts that obscure our capacity to accept support from our chosen families.
Descent

Leonard Cohen - You Want It Darker
Choreography lead by Rebecca Mononen
“A million candles burning / for the help that never came.”

Leonard Cohen’s You Want It Darker - released days before his death - confronts the dichotomy between one’s faith and living in a world where their god permits so much suffering. Cohen shares his unwillingness to endure the injustices that his god allows, but eventually accepts that his fate is death. Although filled with religious iconography, Cohen’s struggle speaks to the greater truth of accepting that death and suffering are essential aspects of the human experience.

Acceptance
Laura Mvula - She
Choreography lead by Alyssa-Marie Crawford, Sonia Balazovjech
Challenges, obstacles and vulnerability afford a rawness both fragile and fertile. Like a forest ravaged by fire, strife gives way to acceptance and new growth. Embracing these circumstances allows us to nurse our identity and reacquaint ourselves with our guiding principles.

Confidence

Jeremy Dutcher - Honour Song
Choreography lead by Nathalie Parmentier
Accepting support from those around us is a powerful opportunity to overcome challenges, build confidence, and develop a sense of honour and pride.
Letting Go

The Prayer Circle - Hope
Choreography lead by Sonia Balazovjech
Embracing our past allows us to better accept the present. Although we will always continue to face new challenges, connecting with our inner selves and respecting what is outside of our circle of influence enables us to experience the journey to its fullest.
Inner Trust

Patrick Watson - Machinery of the Heavens
Choreography lead by Maria-Anna Mavrokefalos
The highest spiritual path is life itself.
